Born in 1979, Phil Heath was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. There, Heath impressed the University of Denver, a Division I university for his basketball skill. He attended the University of Denver on a full scholarship for basketball.

Much of his basketball career paved way for his later interest in bodybuilding.

Basketball offered Heath a good start in having fitness and exposure to other fields if physical competitions.

Heath’s first debut in bodybuilding was in 2002 at age 23. A year later, he won the Northern Colorado State title for a 1st and overall place in Novice and Light-Heavyweight division. In 2004, he won yet another first overall place for NPC (National Physique Committee) Colorado State Heavyweight title. The following year, Heath qualified for competing in IFBB Pro competitions after winning the overall title of NPC USA Championship.

He did not slow down his train of victories. On his first two IFBB competitions as a newcomer professional, he won. His first ever pro IFBB win was won in Colorado in the Colorado Pro Championships, followed by the New York Pro Championship.

He furthered his strong start of his professional bodybuilding career by coming in fifth place in the prestigious Arnold Classic in 2007. He took some time off competition to look after his health and returned strong to win the 2008 Ironman competition and placing second at the Arnold Classic. His success was quickly recovered after some time off competition.

During the same year, he made his debut at the Mr. Olympia competition in which he impressively finished at third place, giving him the honor of being the first novice to finish in the top three in the competitive show since 1993. To be noted is that Heath ha taken some time off competition the previous year due to an illness which had caused an unplanned weight loss which proved to be devastating in his line of work.

His second Mr. Olympia appearance was not as strong as the first, finishing at fifth place in 2009 due to some illness which had caused him to lose some weight. However, he returned strong the following year to take second place at the same contest finishing after the renowned Jay Cutler. He finally reached the top spot of Mr. Olympia in 2011 and defended the title for the next three consecutive years. Between his Mr. Olympia wins, he competed in the 2011 Sheri Classic in which he took first place. The following year, he won the same title along with another Mr. Olympia win.

Heath’s career progressed beyond the competitions. As a professional bodybuilder, he was featured in numerous muscle building┬ámagazines and bodybuilding motivational DVDs. He furthered his passion for body building by starting his own line of nutritional supplements known as “Gifted Nutrition.” Heath managed to also begins line of fitness apparel. He did all this during his competing career and became the first bodybuilder to do so.

Currently, Phil Heath resides in Colorado with his wife. He currently trains at Armbrust Pro Gym in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He is still in pursuit of excellence where bodybuilding is concerned.
